Magic Bodies

Exhibition of New Work by Ako Castuera

September 28 – October 16, 2013

Reception: Saturday, September 28, 6:30 – 10 PM

Giant Robot is proud to present Magic Bodies, an exhibition featuring new work by Ako Castuera.

Enough time has elapsed since Ako Castuera’s previous solo exhibition at GR2 and her participation at the Giant Robot Biennale 3. Castuera’s new body of work is comprised of challenges to her various influences, including her contemporary view on Pre-Columbian style ceramics. ”This show is about giving shape to the imagination,” says Castuera. “I picture it as an invisible ocean that is around us and inside of us while we go about our daily  routines, aware and unaware of it. This is what it looks like when it comes through me.”

Castuera’s previous exhibitions included ceramic sculptures, 2d art and a melding of ideas into a well designed exhibition atmosphere. “I’m thinking of my sculptures as projections of big stories onto a small stage, ancient characters who are going through a costume change.”

Listen to a podcast featuring the artist.

Art Intersections: Asian-Latino Pop-up Museum

August 6-7, 2013

Silver Spring, MD, Veteran’s Plaza

Check out the Tumblr page.

I helped work on this and will be in Washington D.C. for a few days. I hope this sort of newer thinking in art proves to be fun for everyone. I’m glad to have included Ako Castuera, kozyndan, Clement Hanami, Albert Reyes and Ana Serrano in this exhibition. (http://apa.si.edu/asianlatino/)

Curators Eric Nakamura, Shizu Saldamando, and Adriel Luis will project artwork onto the public surfaces of Veterans Plaza, telling the visual stories of Asian-Latino cultural connection as a DJ spins Asian-Latino fusion music. Two evenings of Street Culture & Art programming will feature “pop-up” galleries to transform public space from the utilitarian to the expressive. By way of projection, we map visual stories of Asian-Latino shared culture onto the canvas of our walls-not simply bringing art into public space but making public space into art.

Eric Nakamura will be in attendance both days (Come say hi!).

Stories – A Group Exhibition

August 17 – September 4, 2013

Reception: Saturday, August 17, 6:30–10 PM

Giant Robot is proud to present Stories, an art show featuring new works by Edwin Ushiro, Jen Tong, Jeni Yang, Martin Hsu, Sean Chao, and Tessar Lo.

The commonality of the artists is simply that they’re operating in a similar art environment although they’re located in different parts of North America. Edwin Ushiro, originally from Hawaii draws sublime imagery that often appear dark in message, yet are at times as light as can be. East Coaster, Jen Tong creates imagery that’s reminiscent of a world that’s something like Miyazaki meeting Moebius. Jeni Yang, a consistent exhibitor at Giant Robot works with wood and imagery that includes both cats and snacks. Martin Hsu, now in San Francisco is the creator of Dragon Boy creates a fantasy world that’s screaming to be animated. Sean Chao creates tiny worlds in diorama form. Tessar Lo, from Toronto draws freely and has honed his style that mixes both composition and abstractness.

giant robot time: 7.12.13 | art by: takashi murakami

Game Night 15

Featuring our friends: The Behemoth

Saturday, July 13, 7-10 PM

We’ll be a featuring a few games by The Behemoth at Giant Robot 2. We’ll have The Behemoth merch for sale and a special event: BattleBlock Theater tournament. The winning pair get a big prize basket of Behemoth merch! All of the stations will be open to the public so you can play Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers and BattleBlock Theater on their Xbox systems.

Here’s a rundown on the games:

Alien Hominid is best described as an homage to the old side scrolling shoot ‘em up games we grew up to love and hate always bringing us back for more.

Castle Crashers-  is a side-scrolling beat-em-up that incorporates a small number of role-playing video game elements.

BattleBlock Theater- players control a prisoner as they are forced to play through games devised by Hatty Hattington. Controls are simple, with the game largely consisting of running, jumping and punching. Levels are made up of various types of blocks, such as collapsing blocks, sticky walls, bouncy volcanic rocks and deadly spikes, and also feature hazards such as water and deadly creatures.

Signing with Malaysian Artist, Cheeming “Boey”

Saturday, July 20, 2-4 PM

He often draws intricate portraits on styrofoam cups. He’s been featured in multiple videos displaying his craft. Perhaps you’ll get to see him do this. Yet, he’s also promoting a new book, When I Was a Kid, a collection of comics about his youth in Malaysia. The work flows and appears effortless and it goes to show you that the combination of ideas and a simple drawing style work. He draws often and has a blog featuring his daily comic at Iamboey.com

Theo Ellsworth at GR2

July 27 – August 14, 2013

Reception: Saturday, July 27, 6:30–10 PM

Giant Robot is proud to present Laughing Ghost Nation, an art show featuring new works by Theo Ellsworth.

Theo Ellsworth is promising that this is going to be his biggest show ever. That’s a huge promise and we’re ready for him. He now lives in Montana, has an expanded studio and will be in attendance.

From Wikipedia: “Ellsworth has published two books, including Capacity and Sleeper Car. A story from Sleeper Car was chosen for The Best American Comics 2010.[1] His work has been described as “a cross between cartooning and art, poetry and the nonsensical ramblings of a writer emerging from a dream.”

Giant Robot Time: 5.24.13 – Eishi Takaoka solo exhibition reception this Sat. 5.25 at GR2!

giant robot time: 5.24.13 | header: souther salazar

WAITING — SOLO EXHIBITION BY EISHI TAKAOKA

MAY 25 – JUNE 12, 2013

OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, MAY 25, 6:30-10PM

We’re not changing a thing.

“Although the sculptures of Eishi Takaoka all portray the same serene expression, their outwardly calm façade belies a world of bottled-up emotions. With nowhere to go, these intense feelings manifest themselves in outlandish formations that sprout out of the top of each figure’s head. The uniquely sculpted heads of Takaoka are rooted in a personal fantasy world that is fueled by the emotional ups and downs of daily life in lower-middle class Japan. He instills his frustration with life in Kagoshima and feelings of isolation into each of the pieces, which are comprised of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments placed atop empty glass medicine bottles.”

Takaoka’s pieces have been seen in group shows including the Giant Robot Biennale I and III, and on the cover of novelist Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore.

For this exhibition, Takaoka will create new sculptures at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles. He is currently attending school in his hometown of Kagoshima, Japan and will not be in Los Angeles for the opening.

ARTIST SUSIE GHAHREMANI ON HER BAND, BULLETINS

By MARTIN WONG

I’ve known Susie Ghahremani as an awesome indie illustrator, artist, crafter, and good friend for more than a decade but had only scratched the surface of her musical talent through karaoke. Last week I saw her play with a fairly new band, Bulletins, right down the street from my house at the Silverlake Lounge. The sound is both lovely and cosmic with elements that recall the energy-filled hooks of Velocity Girl and noisy undercurrents of Asobi Seksu. Afterward, I had to ask my pal from San Diego for more details… >>
