this interview was conducted via the telephone prior to my trip to san francisco during the 4th of july weekend 1997, when i met jon mortisugu and his wife, amy davis, in person. It originally appeared in flower bridge zine. they're one of the most raddest, nicest and funniest couples i have ever met...and jon even gave me the vinyl version of the soundtrack to his latest film, fame whore. we met at a whacked starbucks right off the civic center bart station, which was also my first time going on the bart by myself (woo hoo!)...here's our entire phone conversation on the 18th of june...again, a lot has happened since that time. i've seen fame whore and it's fucking amazing! it's definitely one of the best movies i've seen; and jon already went and came back from the hawaii film festival... but read on, jon's an amazing person and has some valuable info and advice for you aspiring filmmakers out there!

GR: what did you do today?
jon: let's see, you know the fame whore cd, i'm also pressing it on vinyl and I made a catalog for all my video tapes and the records i sell...i printed 1000 of them and i'm gonna put the catalogs in there for free, and i've been talking to the record pressing plant...they're gonna mail them out so i should be getting them, the vinyl soundtrack, tomorrow...i'm totally excited about that...except the only thing is that i sorta have to make the covers by hand, so there would be 1000 sheets that i would have to trim by hand but it's cool because i've already done 100 and it didn't take that long. i'm also really excited because i've had so many problems making the fame whore soundtrack.

GR: was making the cd a lot easier?
jon: yeh, the cd was a lot easier and a lot cheaper...and it sorta opened my eyes to how cheap it is to make cds and how much they jack up the prices in stores and it's like, whoa, someone's making a lot of money here and it's not me! man, it's like a cd costs about $1 or $1.50 to make and they charge $17.99!

GR: i know, it's like, where does it all go? i thought that vinyl would be cheaper than cds.
jon: i know, i thought so too but it turns out that vinyl is twice as expensive to press and then this album had so many problems, like the place that printed the covers, they made them a little too big so that the distributor i'm working with is saying that its too big and it wouldn't fit in our boxes so you have to hand trim them...and then the record keeps skipping on this one song so they have to keep on repressing them...and i was supposed to have the records a month and a half ago but i'm still waiting. but now, i'm really happy because i think it's all gonna work out.

GR: that's totally good. which track was skipping?
jon: oh, the very last one, sophie's song, "superstar." it would play through the whole song and ten seconds before it would end, it would just skip. and it's the last song on the album that i had the most problems with.

GR: that's so messed up, especially when the whole thing was all ok!
jon: i'm just happy that it's all working out...it's been cool today, let's just hope it'll be cool tomorrow!
