then we talked about getting his movie, fame whore, to be screened in los angeles. jon: i want to do a fame whore screening in la, like have a big premiere there but it's so hard to do because it's been rejected from all these los angeles film festivals. GR: why is that?! jon: my theory is just because of the movie's message and fame whore is basically saying, hey, fame is just stupid and empty and it's not what's life's about but if that's yr priority then yr full of shit. that's like opposite the l.a. message, you know? GR: yeh, the whole hollywood thing. jon: yeh, it's like, of course you wanna be famous...oh yeh, sellout, etc...it's like this film is preaching a message that they're not into, you know? that's my theory because as badly as it's done in l.a., it's done really well in new york city. |

GR: i heard that andrea sperling (producer of several gregg araki flicks)
is involved in fame whore...can she get it out here to play? jon: yeh, she is...she produced it...actually what we're trying to do right now, just because we're both really broke right now...we want to rent out a theatre in l.a. and set up a screening and do something like that...we've tried to do it through the festival circuit but everyone's just like, "nah, we don't want to show it" so fuck them, we're gonna do it on our own. but guess what, here's some good news about fame whore! i just found out it got into the hawaii film festival...and it's a pretty big film fest and that's where i'm from and my parents are still out there. i've never gone to any of my screenings with my parents before. i'm really excited and i think they'll get a kick out of the movie. GR: have they seen yr other stuff? jon: yeh, they've seen most of it, all of it, i think...they were freaked out at first but they were a bit mellower about it but i can't wait for them to see fame whore. GR: did they like terminal u.s.a.? jon: yeh, they liked that one. GR: is terminal in any way biographical or autobiographical? jon: it definitely has moments where i was drawing from my experiences like my grandfather actually did die on a hospital bed in the middle of the house but a lot of it, i was making up and having fun with...but there are little instances where things happened to my friend or my sister. GR: when is that hawaii film festival? jon: it's not until november...but it will be fun because me and amy will fly out to hawaii. GR: has she been there? jon: yeh, we just went like half a year ago and it was the first time for her and we spent about a week there and it was really fun. she really likes hawaii and i like it a lot more than i was growing up there. GR: how long did you live there before you moved out here? jon: i was born and raised in hawaii and then when i was 18, i went to college in the east coast and i was there for a few years and i moved out to san francisco in 1990 so i've been here for awhile. GR: why san francisco? jon: part of it was probably because i was in providence, rhode island, where i went to school... |
