Where Q-bert and the Cardigans collide spawns one of the most original bands around today, Buffalo Daughter. Titillating ears since 1993, BD's anti-mainstream presence may appear to be here, but the reality is that these three women are way ahead of the pack. SuGar, MoOog, and Yumiko fill their albums with the most innovative sounds you've ever heard. These Japanese superstars spark up something refreshing on every track they work on. And, not only that, they also contribute their talents to a spew of other projects. They've collaborated with Cornelius, Takako Minekawa, Money Mark, U.N.K.L.E. and Pizzicato Five, just to name a few.

On a recent visit, SuGar took some time out to allow us to pick her brain a bit.

GR:What or who were your biggest influences?
SuGar: The late '70s to early '80s New Wave sceneÖbands like Devo, the Clash, The Stranglers, The Slits, Talking Heads, Lizzy Mercier Declour, XTC and Bow Wow Wow.

GR:What are some of your favorite records?
SuGar: There are so many, I can't list them.

GR:What is your favorite country to perform in?
SuGar: Where ever fans are receptive.

GR:What's your favorite website?
CNN.COM

GR:Where do you call home?
SuGar: I live at home with my family.

GR:Are you working on a new album?
SuGar: It's not out yet. We're still working on it.

GR:On the first track of "New Rock", what do you mean by "No New Rock"?
SuGar: The opposite of new rock. The naming idea came from the No New Rock Movement in the '80s. We liked their punk spirits, so we named it after that. There's really nothing more to explain.

GR:Do you have a favorite toy?
SuGar: Star Wars figures, I'm a collector. My favorite is a 1 foot tall, 3 feet wide rubber Jaba the Hutt.

GR:Favorite video game?
SuGar: All the Super Mario Brothers series from Nintendo.

GR:Do you have any fears of the future?
SuGar: I always try to believe things are going to be better even during a bad period in my life.

GR:Where do you see Japanese-based pop/rock going?
SuGar: Getting bigger in Tokyo, both mainstream and underground. I like pop idols like Namie Amuro and Morning Musume, but I also love indie bands like OOIOO and Smurf Otokogumi.

GR:What is your favorite Television show?
SuGar: Ally McBeal

GR:There's a little Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" (of the Eagles) on your last album. Are you fans or was that just a random move?
SuGar: I didn't realize it was him. I just recorded the noise of the town walking by Shibuya Center Gai. That's the main street in Shibuya which is the main fashion/music town for the young generation.

GR:Would you rather have peanut butter and jelly or egg salad?
SuGar: Egg salad.
