Together Chen Kaige

GR: How did you wind up working with a director of photography and costume designer from Korea?
CK: I like them! They're very professional and very good. They have great imagination. Everyone says that the cinematographer is perfect. He's a professor, he's a good cameraman, and he's a good operator, and we designed the shots and lighting together. He has his own crew from Korea, and we're just like brothers. We were very happy.

GR: How did you react to the death of Leslie Cheung?
CK: We worked together twice. My wife and I were in Hong Kong before Chinese New Year and we tried to find him. We made phone calls, but eventually we were told that he wasn't in a very good mood. He was very depressed. I don't know why. Someone said that he was haunted by the ghosts of his last film. I'm not so sure that's right. We were in Beijing when people called us from Hong Kong. We were very, very shocked. We didn't want to believe it was true because we wanted him to play a part in our next project. How sad it was. I wrote an article to give to a Chinese film magazine. I think he was very emotional and very sensitive. My first reaction was that he turned himself into the character he played in Farewell My Concubine.

GR: What about your Hollywood movie, Killing Me Softly?
CK: The film was made in London, actually. The story of that is over because I did what I could. I did learn a lot of things from it, though, and I had a nice working relationship with everyone on that crew.

GR: You prefer making movies in China than England?
CK: You know, I don't see the difference really. I always joke with people by saying, "If you want to make a film, you need a camera and that's it. With the right camera, you can get what you want." It's not that easy, but what I'm saying is that everything's the same except for afternoon tea. We don't have afternoon tea in China.

GR: Do you want to make another film in English?
CK: Not at all. I'm fine. I just want to get the best projects I can. I've been given a lot of scripts for my consideration but I've decided to do the things I like to do no matter what.
