Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

[Warning, Links NSFW] Japan is home to enough world achievements to make any patriot proud. This isn’t one of them. Masanobu Sato of Tokyo, Japan won the 9th annual World Masturbate-a-thon on May 2, 2009, clocking in at 9 hours and 58 minutes. Metropolis TV videotaped a brief documentary on his daily life where he “trains” for two hours with a tenga in front of his girlfriend and cat. (You read that correctly). Wait until the end of the video though. That’s when it gets really depressing.  He expresses that “A real female of course, smells, is dirty…because it’s a human being…So we have this anime, isn’t it clean and pretty? Masanobu Sato, a living, breathing, forever alone meme.

This isn’t a Top Ten list like “Best Concert, Best Movie, or Best Toy”. It’s a list that’s as important and there are highlights in them all, but by no means is it a Top Ten of anything. They’re just important as everything else – family, friends, and so on. Maybe I’ll try and turn out a list that’s more like that…

We painted the mural on the wall. That alone was an 11 hour project.

Zen Garage – The year started off great with the Zen Garage art opening just a few days before the new year. Yet, the actual New Year’s Day kicked off with the Oshogatsu program at JANM. It was motor vehicles including the Giant Robot Scion Car I designed but also custom motorcycles and the now vintage David Choe Scion. Thanks to Len Higa and Shinya Kimura for jumping on board. The year began with a GR show in a museum – it’s a great start with you get to do a project with friends, new friends, and a place like JANM. Collaboration can be more fun than doing something alone.

It’s great when artists install their own work.

James Jean Art Show – Aside from it being one of the greater or even greatest art shows of the year, it also indelibly marked the night that the earthquake struck Japan. I recall, it was at the after party, the twitter messages were beginning. An 8.9 quake? The thought of a giant quake was one thing, yes there would be lives lost and yes a lot of damage, but less than an hour later, the Tsunami hit the shores and that’s when the things got real, it became internet news for days straight.

Ed Lee isn’t a youtube sensation, but in our generation, he can be. The title Fear of the Moustache is a parody of the Fear the Beard slogan that’s SF Giant’s pitcher Brian Wilson’s mantra. Supporters and celeb endorsements include Will-i-am. Tech giant folks, Brian Wilson himself doing MC Hammer moves and Mr Hammer himself. This reported cost $18k to make, and that’s still a questions mark. Perhaps it’s music licensing. The talent was allegedly all free, so where does that cost come from? The video meanwhile is still cheaper than the commercial spots and will turn some heads.

We’re not sure if anyone reads the petition site and says, “hmm, I think I’m going to change the name of this park.” However in this case, it’s a fine idea. Betty Ong park, a place where she played, learned, grew up, and perhaps ultimately made her the courageous person she was. Yes, she was a cool airplane attendant aboard one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center buildings. She’s been crowned a hero, so why not name a friggin park after her in San Francisco where she was born. That sounds easy and a great tribute on the opposite coast of NYC. Might as well do it now. She is old now, and often has to use a wheelchair. But this seemingly frail old Japanese-American woman is a titan in the world of Judo, and can still probably kick your backside with just her hands and elbows. Her name is Keiko Fukuda, and she is the highest-ranking female judo master in history. Ms. Fukuda (she has never been married) is the last surviving student of Kanō Jigorō, the founder of judo. She was born in Tokyo in 1913, but has lived San Francisco and taught in the Bay Area since the ‘60s, when she became a U.S. citizen. Fukuda-sensei has been a recognized judo master for decades. But reportedly because of discrimination in the judo world, the progress with which her dan, or rank, has risen has been slow. She was only awarded the 9th dan in judo in 2006, fifty-three years after achieving the 5th dan in Japan. Finally, however, Fukuda’s dedication and skill have received the ultimate recognition, the 10th dan, which was awarded to her last week by USA Judo. The 10th dan is judo’s highest rank, and as the article at the link states, only three other people in the world have ever reached it. Ever. Follow the links to read more about this amazing woman (San Francisco Chronicle – Woman Earns Judo’s Highest Rank) Additional information about Fukuda-sensei’s life in judo can be found here.
