Giant Robot Store and GR2 News
Did you know that the honey you might be eating isn’t as clean as you’d think? Yes, honey is clear and pretty, almost like an amber color at times, and that means it’s made by bees. But did you know that the US can make 48% of the honey we consume and the rest has to come from other places? The honey you eat might not be safe. Some of it is from Asia, and it’s labelled and deemed unsafe. It’s not ok to import it to some countries, but it could be in your US sold bottle. There’s no definitive word as to who has what, but it’s here. The 52% that isn’t being produced in the US, might be from China and might have lead in it. (Food Safety News – Honey Laundering)

One of the toughest parts about making Takoyaki (the octopus ball) is flipping the ball around. You need the perfect mixture, the right tool, and the perfect technique. It’s not easy. But this device isn’t quiet at all, but actually flips it, a little at a time. I’m not sure how eager one is to buy a machine just for Takoyaki, but this looks like the cure for the difficulties of making it. Jonathan Gold, friend of Giant Robot and writer for the LA Weekly, talks about shark finning, enjoying it, but understanding what’s going on with extinction. It’s an op/ed for the LA Times. “But Chinese culinary culture has proved resilient over the centuries, as able to absorb such foreign ingredients as chiles and squashes as it has been to withstand the absence of sea turtle skirt and bear paw, whose preparation obsessed the earliest Chinese gourmets.” (LA Times – J Gold)

Reading a report that states beef “may” have been consumed it ridiculous. Is it really safe to be eating radioactive beef from cows who ate radioactive feed and hay? Reading this makes me think that just about every wrong decision is being made, but then again, that’s what we get in the news. It does make for great headlines, but at the same time, why are cows 18 miles away from a meltdown being farmed? Why aren’t they being checked more regularly? “Goshi Hosono, state minister in charge of consumer affairs and food-safety, said he hoped to head off any overreactions. “If we were to eat the meat everyday, then it would probably be dangerous,” Hosono said at a news conference Tuesday. “But if it is consumed only in small portions, I don’t think it would have any long-lasting effects on the human body.” “… I don’t think”?! C’mon! (CNN – Cows)
