Kaiju vs Heroes Exhibition by Mark Nagata at JANM

Mark Nagata is one of he foremost collectors of vintage Japanese sofubi toys. There was once a heyday perhaps in the late 80s and early 90s when the figures and toys were plentiful, lower in price, and part of the flea market world pre-Ebay. Although collectors were already deep into it, it was still the "wild west." Mark went through that period all the way to the present day where he wins auctions for kaiju treasures in Japan.  This exhibition at JANM captures Mark's story from childhood, to his time as an illustrator, and to making his own toys. The best part about this exhibition and story is that parts of Mark's story isn't 100% unique, it's a similar upbringing...

Giant Robot at the JANM Kokoro Craft Boutique 2016

Giant Robot Store packed up some things and I took them down to the Japanese American National Museum for the Kokoro Craft Boutique. The event is a fundraiser for the Museum and it's put on by the volunteers. Will it become two days? Here's a link to more photos of the event. It's a...

Giant Robot Biennale 4 - The Final Day

It was a great final day of the Giant Robot Biennale 4 at JANM. There was no closing event scheduled so a bunch of us got together and walked through one last time to find new details in each part of the exhibition. Yoskay Yamamoto arrived first, then Rob Sato and Ako Castuera, followed by Andrew Hem, Luke Chueh and Esao Andrews. It was nice to hang out and experience everything together.  For the many who did make it during the last day, they got to ask questions, listen to stories, and take some photos with the artists. The opening night was a great event, however the closing was special in it's own way. It was like hanging out in a foreign...
