Giant Robot Store and GR2 News
Giant Robot was granted this nice POD in front of JANM and MOCA Geffen in Little Tokyo. It’s a four day festival starting this thursday July 14- Sunday 17th. Here’s a map of the container exhibits at bottom. Our POD is a super mini version of our shop and yes, the items will be for sale. I had two people ask if everything will be free. Sorry, life costs.
There’s actually a soft opening this evening… what?! Just found out. I’ll be there, I think, if not look for that box to be locked down.

HOURS
Thursday July 14 4pm-11pm
Friday July 15 4pm-midnight
Saturday July 16 11am-midnight
Sunday July 17 11am-7pm

Reading a report that states beef “may” have been consumed it ridiculous. Is it really safe to be eating radioactive beef from cows who ate radioactive feed and hay? Reading this makes me think that just about every wrong decision is being made, but then again, that’s what we get in the news. It does make for great headlines, but at the same time, why are cows 18 miles away from a meltdown being farmed? Why aren’t they being checked more regularly? “Goshi Hosono, state minister in charge of consumer affairs and food-safety, said he hoped to head off any overreactions. “If we were to eat the meat everyday, then it would probably be dangerous,” Hosono said at a news conference Tuesday. “But if it is consumed only in small portions, I don’t think it would have any long-lasting effects on the human body.” “… I don’t think”?! C’mon! (CNN – Cows)

I’m super into teas, so I’ve been meaning to check out the Wai’oli Tea Room since I first heard about it. I was a little bummed on their selection of teas (one of those “choose a tea bag from the box” type of places), but the general ambience and the lunch food more than made up for it. It’s sort of a garden setting, so birds fly in and try to land on your table and eat straight off your plate, so the diligent waiter sometimes has to bring out a water blaster gun and shoot them with water. Apparently it’s the only thing that’ll keep the birds from landing on your sandwich. Wai’oli Tea Room

Everybody is not kung-fu fighting over “Legend of a Rabbit”, but some of them are scratching their heads and mumbling “rip-off” under their breath. That’s because the similarities between this big 3D animation production, China’s first, and those movies about a certain clumsy, wise-cracking panda are said to be striking. In fact, the goal of the rabbit hero’s quest for kung-fu greatness is to exact revenge upon an evil kung-fu fighter that happens to be….a panda. The film was released in Shanghai on July 11, and some audience reactions are calling the movie shanzhai, the Chinese word for copy or fake. Producer and director Jun Lijun is unfazed by this, and has publicly pointed out that “Rabbit” has been picked up for distribution in 62 countries without one word of protest from “Kung-fu Panda” studio Dreamworks over copyright infringement. That sounds pretty convincing; but what will really be interesting is to see how China’s first effort in the 3D animation blockbuster arena stacks up against the huge movies Dreamworks and Pixar have been releasing for years. (CNNGo – How Will “Rabbit” Stack Up?)
