Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

Amazing in a way. Japan is now nearly nuclear power free. This doesn’t mean some will start up again, but for the moment there is only 1 nuclear powered reactor. It’ll be an amazing feat for a country like Japan to function without nuclear power which will then force them to go fossil or an alternative source. It’s a chance for something great to happen. The Reuters story brings up some questions. As Japan leaves nuclear power, yes today there is supposedly only 2 of the 54 reactors are still in operation in all of Japan. Here’s the bigger problem, where does the power come from? Fossil fuel imports are now at a high in Japan… and what does that lead to, at least in the US? Invasions and war? Kan became a supporter of finding alternate energy sources in exchange for safety which is great, but then where will it come from? Solar seems like it won’t be enough…

A book released has the huge title of Yakuza and The Nuclear Industry: Diary of An Undercover Reporter Working at the Fukushima Plant (ヤクザと原発-福島第一潜入記-鈴木-智彦). With that title you can figure out that it’s a tell all. Yet today, theatlanticwire published an article that is frightening. It tells of the corruption that takes place in a company (TEPCO) that’s partially responsible for the nuclear meltdown. Yes you can’t prevent a giant tsunami wave that crashed your buildings and caused three meltdowns, but you can come clean about what’s going on and who you’re hiring – which then translates into where the donation money is going. Yet, it’s been going on for years, and only now that this problem occurred is it something we care about. Who are these yakuza members? Supposedly 3 of the Fukushima 50 are Yakuza members and their relationship with nuclear companies is nothing new. The reconstruction efforts are all joint with Yakuza based construction companies. The Billionaire is talking about building reactors in China. The Terrapower reactors are supposed to be greener since they’re using used used uranium from other reactors around the world. It sounds great, and in a much simpler concept, why not find a way that uses NO nuclear material? With his new “invention” it seems to make other reactors and their waste okay.
