I had lunch with my good friend and artist Stella Lai (above) this afternoon. You might recall her cover art for Giant Robot 58, her contributions to Giant Robot Biennale 2, or her Mr. Chiizu app. She informed me that the software for embellishing photos, which recently began offering a theme by Junko Mizuno, launched a feline Christmas package today.
It turns out that the 50 photos of cats on a Japanese Cat island that we linked you to, is actually “the second cat island”. There’s the first one, which is further north in Japan is called, “Tashiro-jima” There’s 100 folks on the island and the cats out number the people. It’s in Miyagi Prefecture which is fairly close to the epicenter of the 3.11 earthquake. (Care2 – Tashiro Jima) We wish there were more cat photos!
Yes, it’s a sad situation. People get out of work later in Japan, and arriving at 8pm to pet cats after a crappy day at work is routine for many. Now that the shops need to put away their cats at 8pm, it’s going to cause a lot of problems for some shops who have that 2 hour time as a profit center. The weird thing is that there’s plenty of fire hazards among the crammed up bars, yakitori shops, which when a fire erupts kills everyone inside. Yet cat cafes are a smoke free, alcohol free environment and they can’t keep the cats out past 8pm?! Makes little sense. (Newsday – Cat Cafe Curfew)
