The commonality of the first exhibition of 2013 will feature six artists who’ll be exhibiting works ranging in subjects, yet most or all with be paintings. Each artist approaches their works in their own materials and ways. A few have recently graduated Art Center College of Design (Kwanchai Moriya, Elliot Brown and Sarah Lee) two currently live in Japan (Jay Horinouchi and Maiko Kanno), and one (Shawn Cheng) is currently living in New York City. Hard to argue the title, but are they really? They may welcome the best, but are the typical middle range cosplayer really welcomed? Keep in mind the best can compete with the best anywhere in the world, but the “medium” consists of kids who couldn’t fit or look right into their costumes, and no, they wouldn’t be welcomed anywhere. The only other time I put together a show was a San Diego Comic-Con party with Flattbush, Upsilon Acrux, and The Binges with DJ sets by Free The Robots way back in 2009. Looking back, that was a pretty rad lineup! So it makes sense that Bradley from Flattbush would facilitate my second-ever gig. He serves drunks at Alex’s Bar but also books shows now and then. This one came together at the last minute and I am very grateful to my friends who put themselves out there during the deadest part of the holidays to take part.
