Every visit to the Yasukuni Shrine by the Prime Minister of Japan, enflames all of Japan’s past war crimes. Enshrined are 14 Class A War Criminals (See the list here at China.org.cn of course!) among plenty of soldiers. A possible future PM, Shinzo Abe recently visited the shrine, possibly causing a stir with both Chinese and Koreans during this island dispute. Here are a few photos from a visit in 2010. It’s an amazing 50,000 toys that appear to be somewhat randomly placed in cases. 39 year old, Somchay Nitimongkolchai purchased a large amount on eBay. The price to get in is about $1.95. photo by Thomas Nakanishi Things stay true throughout the generations of blogging about Japan. Here’s what one CNN reporter says about Japan, and it falls under “travel surprises”. In a nutshell. 1) Stylish kids everywhere. Yes, those expensive haircuts are everywhere. 2) Both tech and old school together. Yes this happens when a country has been around for much longer than the USA. 3) Tokyo is big. So big, you can a little of everything. 4) Expensive but also not. Yes melons can be $100, but you can eat udon for $4. 5) Clean. Not Singapore clean, but clean. (CNN – Japan)

It’s too late, you missed out on the left 5 patty burger for $6. This was on October 16th, but you can get the sandwich with the 5 deep fried shrimp patties October 23rd. Lotteria is a junk food burger chain in Japan that might be one of the worst on the list of places to eat. (Huffpo – Lotteria) Rocketnews24 has a little more about the burgers in Japanese, including more photos. (Rocketnews24 – Lotteria) Here’s a video of someone in Japan trying this monstrosity. The next size up? There was once a 10 patty burger. Just so you can see it, here’s a photo of the 10 patty version from alafista

After being fortunate enough to cover the Hawaii International Film Festival a number of times for Giant Robot magazine, and I have to say that it’s my favorite of all time. The range and balance of art to trash, big budget to indie, and Asian to not Asian perfectly suits my tastes. Plus they get the raddest filmmakers to attend because who wouldn’t want to travel to Honolulu? (The beach, shave ice, malasadas, and friends and relatives don’t hurt, either.) So I’m super excited to attend this year’s festival as a contributor as well as a supporter. I’ve been helping some friends get their skate videos shown on the big screen as part of the Animal Style program, and this showing is doubly cool because they’ll be right alongside the much-anticipated Bones Brigade documentary. Many of my filmmaker friends are already on the island–probably ripping it up at the skate parks and local spots as I type this–and I can’t wait to join them tomorrow. If you happen to be on Oahu, I cordially invite you to attend. If you have buddies there, it would be awesome if you told them about it as well. Looking forward to seeing a lot of you out there!
