Bummer for Kwanhyun Park. He’s a straight A student who didn’t get into the UC school of his choice although he was plenty qualified. Maybe it wasn’t enough extra curricular activities?Overachieving Asian Americans are getting bumped by the international students. Why? Because schools can charge more to have a spoiled child of wealthy and perhaps corrupt official or landlord in a country filled with savages. (We’re kidding). However, the enrolling rate of Chinese students are increasing and taking spots away from qualified students of all ethnicities. “In 2009, University of California administrators told the San Diego campus to reduce its number of in-state freshmen by 500 to about 3,400 and fill the spots with out-of-state and international stu dents, said Mae Brown, the school’s admissions director. California residents pay $13,234 inannual tuition while nonresidents pay $22,878.” (Bloomberg – China Students)

Imagine if it happened… College majors that don’t pay, like English, History, Psychology, Art were cancelled. China may do this at their colleges since the jobless numbers seem to be increasing alongside of the number of graduates. It’s facing some resistance, but at the same time, imagine if it happened here. It would support a logjam of people with similar majors fighting for the same jobs. Will that help or create yet a larger problem? (WSJ – Education)

Yes believe it. Of course, why not with a place as large as the US with apparent wealth, why not send your kids out of your way and across the globe. The graphic says it all. Look at the orange and how many students that represents. Chinese students are huge. It also explains why UCLA a 40% Asian school now has Asian food in one of the dorms “Feast at Rieber”. The photo in the link shows a “yuzu kosho” chicken sandwich. Are they kidding? That’s a highly specialized and detailed meal! Perhaps we can say, Chinese students are the new Japanese students.
