Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

The word is finally out that PictureBox will be publishing the result of a collaboration between three GR friends, Anne Ishii, Graham Kolbeins and Chip Kidd all to honor and share the work (almost all of it never-before-translated into English)  of Gengoroh Tagame. Vastly different in content, context and audience than yaoi (boys loving on boys) manga, this collection could significantly impact the current generation of American comics creators exploring subversive and erotic themes. Tagame’s work is known now in the US in small circles to express a masculinity and sexuality that is rarely represented. I love, on so many levels, that this project has been undertaken, and it will be interesting to see how PictureBox, a pretty hetero outfit on the whole, moves forward with it. Graphically and thematically, it’s a big leap for them. Keep it on your reading wish-list. Graham has been passionate about Tagame’s work for several years now, and has always had an eye for the quirky but sincere. The proof is in his film projects, and in his Future Shipwreck pudding. Anne couldn’t be a better translator/producer of this project. She’s the smartest gay man that I know. Chip Kidd brings his clout, his design sensibility, quality control, and his passion for the hidden comic genre. All in all, this is a dream team that’s been assembled. Very stoked to see this go from conception to birth announcement! Spring 2013. Save your lunch/bondage gear/Butt Magazine money and buy this.

It isn’t easy for the casual fan to acquire tickets to Comic-Con. Once you get in, it’s an ordeal to squeeze past the movie studio palaces with their big screens and giveaways. But if you are willing to put in the work, Comic-Con is still pretty awesome.

Preview Night. I don’t think I’ve ever seen preview night so crowded. Of course, the first place I went was the Giant Robot booth to see my great friend and conspirator, Eric Nakamura (top right). If you looking at the GR site, you know what I mean. Also there was ace cartoonist John Pham (top left) Why is it that I see certain L.A. friends only at San Diego? One more reason to go, I guess. On the bottom row are the two other places where I lurked. Not working the GR booth anymore, I can be that guy who hangs out at other people’s booths until it becomes uncomfortable. At Super 7, we talked with Brian and Scott more about hardcore shows than toys. And then there were Tom and Peggy of Drawn & Quarterly with Peter from The Beguiling. No bow-tie on Tom yet because the table was still a work in progress, without banners flaunting their world-class  roster of indie, international, and classic comic artists.

Lin article in GQ that sort of explains a side of the story. Carmelo Anthony keeps digging himself deeper. Also it’s great the author of the article points out, “Apparently, to Melo, Jeremy Lin is not in the fraternity. Or at least, Lin’s place in it is dubious enough that he has not earned the omerta that every other player gets. Anybody wanna try to convince me it has zero to do with Lin being Asian-American?” (GQ - Lin) As many Asian Americans are going to say, “Good luck Knicks”. There’s no championship coming soon. It’s as if the Knicks are going through the motions to try and be a contender, but they’re just not and hate to say, never were, even with Lin.

A little bit of controversy: but this line sort of was lame: “Ashley said that the playhouse has used color-blind casting in the past. In 2010, the company presented the play “Surf Report” by Annie Weisman. He said the play’s central family was written as Caucasian, but the role of the daughter was later reconceived following a strong audition by an Asian American actress.” Granted, Asian daughter from white parents. Yes it’s possible. Look at Zoe Chao (below). She can play a non Asian role. But a Chinese ruler played by a white actor? Impossible. That’s a load of crap. Sorry, we don’t care about the play, but we care about your BS. (LATimes – The Nightingale)
