Here’s a little more about the google street views of post Earthquake Japan. 44,000 square miles were reshot just to have a record of what happened. Here’s our link to the story along with the viewer. The NPR story actually has before and after views which are sobering and somber. If you don’t know how to use it, just drag the man icon in the left corner to the blue line in the road (zoom in first), then you get Street View and from there just navigate. That’s Greg Otani working at Safe and Save Market (now closed) A few of you might be interested in the Sawtelle Blvd of the past. Here’s some stories that were presented by some of the ex-merchants. Recently a discussion / presentation took place at the West LA Buddhist temple including the past owners or family members of owners from Tensho Drugs, Safe and Save Market, Yamaguchi, and Sawtelle Food Market. More programs will happen in the future and the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle has recaps of their previous events under Sawtelle Stories. There’s a lot of history in the area around Giant Robot, GR2 and gr/eats and if you’re into the local history, this is a place to check it out. Yet, for most of “us”, the importance and interest of the local history resides in the locals, historians and researchers. Do I care? Yes, but with the knowledge, what do I do with it? It may not seem like much, but an Asian American coaching a serious college football program is a rarity. He’ll be the head coach at University of Hawaii, the perfect fit since he’s a Chinese American from Hawaii. His claim to fame aside from being part of the BYU football program, mostly as a play caller and then his Offensive Coordinator position at USC during their national number one years in 2003 and 2004. He’s basically a coach and will be the perfect fit for the school. (Fox – Norm Chow)

Will it ever be clean? Also once it’s clean, what will go here? Apartments? In 100 years or even 200 years, many will forget, many will say the area is totally clean and yes lofty ocean front apartments will get made just as they do on top of toxic landfills. 40 years sounds like a good timetable but why make something when it takes decades to remove it? He didn’t die from enemy fire. He supposedly killed himself in a guard tower in Afghanistan. It’s another result of hazing in the military. It’s hopefully isolated, yet hazing happens everywhere, from sports to college organizations to the military. This one probably went too far. It’s not exciting news except some form of justice is being served. Hopefully it’s completely fair. This echoes marching band member, Robert Champion’s death at Southwest DeKalb High School as a result of hazing. (NY Times – Danny Chen)
