Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

The major huge Uniqlo behemoth shop is opening. 89,000 square feet, 100 dressing rooms, 50 registers, and clothes that fit Asians better. A statement mentioned that the folks at Uniqlo aren’t eyeing The Gap as their goal in the US, they’re looking more towards Apple! It’s a bold thing to say, but at the same time, at Giant Robot, we eyed magazines like National Geographic over the many street culture or Asian American types of magazines as what we wanted to be like. The Occupy Wall Street movement has gained traction in the past four weeks and it looks like its spirit of opposition has spread overseas. The Wallstreet Journal reports that the demand for an “Occupy Tokyo.” Activists created a Facebook group back in September, yet no fruit yielded from the seeds of dissent so far. Calls for a worldwide protest tentatively set for Oct. 15 are “scheduled” as of right now. However, people are confused as to where the protest will specifically take place, its hour, and what exactly they’re protesting to start. The Occupy Tokyo movement–if it even exists–is even more disorganized than its American cousin and that’s saying a lot. This doesn’t mean that Japan doesn’t have anything to protest against. Its youth have had their share of employment problems since its nearly bi-decennial recession with lawmakers offering little to no improvement. The Japanese have endured many of the social problems from America’s Great Recession for much longer without the public rage. If, however, Japan does manage to ignite a movement of the same magnitude of OWS, it’s doubtful that it’ll meet its goals since the 1960s student movement similarly hit a dead end. Either way, October 15th is swiftly approaching. In the mean time, keep your eyes and ears open.

“The North Korean survivors demanded that Tokyo apologize and pay compensation. Some in Tokyo worry that compensation would be diverted to the government in Pyongyang. North Korean survivors claim that more than 40,000 Koreans were killed in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another 30,000 Koreans survived, and 2,000 returned to what became North Korea after the Korean peninsula was divided in 1948. Japan colonized Korea from 1910 to 1945.” I understand paying for being a colonizing jerk, or forcing Koreans to come to Japan and then get killed. But as I read this, it seemed to say, “pay for being bombed since Koreans died because of it.” Strange. Did Japan want to be atomic bombed? How about someone Else paying for it? A group of Japanese doctors have made their way to the North Korea to treat some survivors – 65+ years later! (Washington Post – Bombed)
