First off, had to show you this. Yes, the GR2 store, and Giant Robot 1 immortalized in a Masakatsu Sashie painting - a great sized one at that. What you aren't seeing are the robot toys from a photo that he took in my room. The rest of the images include his model kits that remain unmade. A famicom, and the GR2 gumball machine, that's mostly cut off in the photo, but you can still make it out....

You can see the image below as well, between Martin, Wendy, and Eloise, who’s got the druid gear on. This show’s taken quite a lot of effort in the last week. The work’s been done, but there’s so much more than that, which goes into some shows. This is one of them. Rolan Bolan, Yuu, and Mr. Sashie I’ll post the images from the opening up on flickr quite soon.

Masakatsu Sashie’s works are often called “orb paintings” since he paints details from his youth as very detailed, compact spheres. Hailing from Kanazawa, Japan, his art captures the scope of his youthful activities and the orbs often represent memories that fade away from the world. His previous works were full of dark imagery, but his more recent pieces include vibrant, often colorful details such as vending machines, fast food signage, and videogames. He cites Mobile Suit Gundam as an influence, and enjoys art by Yukio Oscar Oiwa and Antonio Lopez Garcia. Currently, he teaches at his alma mater, Kanazawa College of Art. Sashie got his start at Takashi Murakami’s GEISAI shows in Japan. In America, he has shown at GEISAI USA at GR2 and the Giant Robot Biennale at the Japanese American National Museum. Under Fluorescent Light will be his first solo show in the United States, and will feature 2 gigantic paintings accompanied by 10 smaller pieces.

Yes, that's quite a large painting behind Masakatsu Sashie. I haven't seen a painting that large by a person at GR2 in a long time and it's great to see this one. It's an orb! It's filled with his memories and nostalgia and it's a separate world from the what's surrounding it. The ball looks alive.
This is a painted model kit of one of his works. It comes blank, so beware. Can you put it together...
